ENGAGE Training and Mobility Grant Award:

Abdel Abdellaoui, PhD Student, Department of Biological Psychology, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, the Netherlands

Abdel Abdellaoui is interested in finding genetic risk factors for mental disorders. He works on methods that can be applied on (de novo) CNV, SNP and/or gene expression data. He is also involved in several other projects, such as analyzing phenotypic twin data with structural equation modelling (SEM) to estimate longitudinal heritabilities and determine measurement invariance, and an international project on genome-wide analyses on assortative mating. He was awarded the ENGAGE Mobility and Travel Grant to attend the 1st OpenGENE workshop in Tartu, Estonia, where the latest developments of the methodology of genome-wide association studies (GWAS) were discussed, as well as other topics, such as epigenetics and the cancer genome. This gave him the oppurtunity to be updated on the methods he is working on by several experts in the field, share his own experiences, and broaden his horizon beyond his own discipline.
